Course Review

By House

Have you ever played a round when you were so sick you thought you might not make it through? I was playing with a group of guys that I historically played great against. Yet, on this particular day I couldn’t muster a 250-yard drive. I struggled with my short game and my concentration. I didn’t realize at the time it was the start of the sickest I have ever been. I had a terrible virus and was actually unable to drive back to Ann Arbor! I had been looking forward to playing this course with these guys for a few months and the reality that I couldn’t fully savor the experience was disappointing. How I managed to take five skins and shot the second best round is beyond me. It only makes me think that my will to play this round was stronger than my body’s idea to shut it down.

The elevated tees make for a scenic round with stunning undulation of its topography. I could drive this course in a cart, not play one shot, and find myself amused and content. It is that remarkable. There are times you will catch yourself just standing in the middle of your round and looking in all directions, soaking in the views. It will make you feel as if you can touch a cloud or throw a rock into Little Traverse Bay and watch the ripples fade away. There is a reason Golf Digest wrote “There’s probably not a more beautiful course on Earth.” This is a truly stunning area and looking back only wish I felt better. I will soon make it back to play this gem in Harbor Springs.

The 5 F's for Little Traverse Bay

1) Fee Factor
18
The price is reasonable for the pure beauty of the course.
2) Friendliness Factor
19
A very professional staff greeted us in the pro shop. The starter took our picture on the tee box of the 1st hole to start the round. This act seemed to be a pretty common request.
3) Fringe Factor
19
I didn't fully take advantage of the amenities offered to me, but what I have heard from reliable sources is that the restaurant is top notch. The views from the clubhouse for a post-round drink are phenomenal.
4) From 1st Tee to Handshake Factor
18
Well-designed and maintained. You can see the influences of some of the most notable architects in golf. We thought some bunker placements were unnecessary and frustrating.
5) Fun Factor
18
All things considered, I had the best time I could standing instead of lying in the prone position. The rest of my group also really enjoyed the round.
